Indianapolis. Isn’t there some kind of race held there? Something about a spectacle?
For nearly 60 YEARS the nation’s best drivers have competed on this track. Perhaps you have heard of a few of them: Dan Gurney? Al Unser? How about Mario Andretti? Well, a NEW generation of drivers can now say they’ve done the same. Surely you’ve heard the likes of Tanner Foust and Scott Speed…and, you will DEFINATELY be familiar with the owner of their GRC Race Team, Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross. As it turns out, team owner Michael Andretti was in attendance this weekend to personally witness his team practically DOMINATE the entire weekend, including taking the Pole, which was easily claimed by former F1 driver Scott Speed.
Back home again in Indiana. That’s likely what locally-based Global Rallycross teams Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross and Bryan Herta Rallysport were thinking when they arrived at Lucas Oil Raceway for the weekend. Each team was able to claim a victory in Round 1 Heats on Saturday. Rookie Cabot Bigham took his second Heat victory of the season for Bryan Herta Rallysport in Heat 1A, with Scott Speed showing Honda Red Bull Drivers, Sebastian Eriksson and Mitchell deJong how it’s done in Heat 1B.
Dang, those bugs are FAST! Yes, I know. Subarus make LEGENDARY rally cars…and, Swedes and Aussies, like former WRC drivers Patrik Sandell and Chris Atkinson, make legendary rally drivers. However, their years of combined World Rally Championship experience was no match for the two Americans driving German pocket-rockets on an Indiana racetrack. Fortunately for Subaru Rally Team USA, Atkinson and Sandell were able to pull off a 1-2 finish in the Round 2 Heats, but only due to a penalty being assessed on Tanner Foust for a first lap mishap.
Things turned around for Tanner Foust during Heat 3A on Sunday. He was virtually unstoppable from the get-go and claimed his first heat victory of the weekend. I wish I could say that things got better for Team Subaru…but, they only got worse. Neither of the WRX STIs was able to complete Heat 3B, and both were forced to limp back to the paddock mid-race. I can’t say exactly what broke on the Subies, but I can only imagine that there were a few Subaru big shots in attendance who are gonna want some answers!
Speed. Scott Speed. Any questions? Because that’s about all that needs to be said. When you combine German Engineering and a former Formula 1 driver (who just happens to have won the GRC Championship in BOTH 2015 and 2016), there’s really no surprise in watching Mr. Speed kick everyone else’s butt. At the end of the weekend, he claimed the top spot on the podium, with teammate (and 2012 and 2013 GRC Champion) Tanner Foust standing right next to him in position #2. And, since everyone loves Canada, it was great to see Loenbro Motorsports’ driver Steve Arpin (he’s from Canada) completing the podium.
PS – Am I the only one who thinks Scott Speed has an uncanny resemblance to Scott Evil from Austin Powers?
