It wasn’t just the livestock that stunk up the Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Saturday night, as the Indy Fuel fell to the top-ranked Fort Wayne Komets, 5-1. Hoosier hockey fans found themselves smack in the middle of the largest single-state cattle show in the country this weekend (yes, the Hoosier Beef Congress) as the gassers once again faced off against their north central-Indiana rivals.
Former Lake Erie Monster, Roman Will, Fort Wayne’s newly reassigned goaltender, nearly gave up a point to the Fuel’s Justin Holl at 3:30 into the game. Unfortunately, Holl’s shot deflected off the goalpost, which really set the tone for the remainder of the first period. At 15:18, a rogue pass sent a puck into the stands, resulting in a 5-on-3 power play and a goal by the Komet’s Shawn Szydlowski.
Much to the delight of the 3,623-strong crowd, fisticuffs ensued between Klarc Wilson and Fort Wayne captain Kaleigh Schrock midway through the second period, with Schrock failing to return to the game afterward. Much to the dismay of the Fuel fans in attendance, the Komets managed to send 3 shots past Indy goaltender Cody Reichard during this same period.
Perhaps the only solace for the hometown crowd was witnessing Garett Bembridge score the team’s only goal during the third period. This would mark the fifth goal for the 6’ Canadian forward in as many games. Let’s see if he can do it again during the team’s upcoming three-game road trip. The Fuel will attempt to burn up Florida before returning to battle the Reading Royals on December 17th at 7:05 pm for Star Wars Night!!!
